IGCSE Science: How to achieve a grade 9

Getting a grade 9 in IGCSE Science isn’t achieved by luck, and it’s not just putting in hours at your desk. You’ll need smart, evidence based techniques that make your knowledge stick and sharpen your exam skills. There’s three sciences to balance, and practical skills to master, which can seem daunting at first. Whether you’ve chosen to take on double or triple science, you’ll need a solid approach to score a grade 9. By combining revision techniques we discuss here, as well as the tips we give to train yourself to think like an examiner, you’ll be setting yourself up to excel with a mindset that demonstrates you are a grade 9 candidate.

Smart revision techniques

First things first, there’s no escaping the fact you’ll need to put the work in. This doesn’t mean constantly doing lengthy revision marathons! Being sat at your desk reading notes over and over is not the most productive use of your time, and cramming is rarely a useful strategy for effective exam revision.

Instead, take a look at some of these tips that form the backbone of quality revision

Active recall- Close those notes, and force yourself to recall the information. The Feynman technique suggests actively retelling the topic aloud. This strengthens memory far more than passive reading and builds confidence in recalling facts quickly

Spaced practice- Revisit topics you are struggling on at spaced intervals. Leaving a day, then three days, then a week, then two weeks between visits locks knowledge into long term memory. A simple calendar plan can make a huge difference

Interleaving practice- Instead of revising Physics, Biology, and Chemistry in isolation, mix them together. Switching between topics forces flexibility in your brain and forces you to make connections. For example, covering Energy Transfers in Physics and Respiration in Biology might help you to see the connection between these otherwise quite different topics. This can be particularly helpful when tackling ‘suggest’ questions

Past papers- Past papers are the most valuable resource for IGCSE science. You’ll be able to see what kind of questions are asked and what exactly to expect from the mark scheme. You don’t need to start with attempting them under timed conditions! Getting yourself familiar with the style of question is important too, but once you feel exam ready, timing yourself will be a very good indicator of your abilities.

Targeting High-Value Areas

Being a top scoring student doesn’t mean revising everything equally. Where you put your effort really counts in IGCSE Science, and maximising your score can mean focusing on areas which are going to gain you the most marks, or hit you hardest if you’re not familiar.

Data handling and practical skills- Graphs tables and experiments always have some focus in the papers. Focus on decoding steps to an experiment, and identifying the purpose of these steps and safety measures where required. When it comes to graphs, accuracy with units and significant figures is always a place to gain marks, and don’t forget spotting anomalies! If you’d like more detail on this area, check out our article here on tackling practical skills

Decoding command words- This applies throughout all of your papers. There are words used in IGCSE science which are a direct ask for a candidate to apply certain skills

Describe-  State a definition or a process which occurs.

Explain- Give reasons for why a process has occured

Evaluate- Weigh pros and cons of something occuring

Suggest- Apply an area of the syllabus to a new scenario you have been presented

Application in unfamiliar contexts- High scoring candidates know to do more than just recall facts. Examiners commonly push candidates by asking them to apply their knowledge into different situations (often accompanied with suggest based questions). Grade 9 candidates can link these contexts back to core principles, for instance, being able to identify that a reaction happened faster and explain that may be because a greater number of particles had energy above the activation threshold.

Remember, understanding principles first is a key part of IGCSE Science, it’s no good remembering processes if you don’t understand the why of each part.

Conclusion

Securing a grade 9 for IGCSE Science isn’t just about hoping for questions that suit you, or cramming at the last minute. You’ll need smart practice, sharp exam technique, and a good understanding of what examiners want. By combining effective revision methods and focusing on those high value areas, you’ll be preparing at the high level examiners expect from top students in no time!

The journey to grade 9 might feel demanding, but it is achievable. Every past paper you attempt, every graph you correctly interpret and even every command word you correctly identify takes you one step closer to success.
