About IB MYP Mathematics

IB MYP Mathematics is designed to develop students’ mathematical knowledge, skills and conceptual understanding. It focuses on mathematical tools and techniques that can be applied in real-world situations, as well as the development of conceptual understanding, problem solving abilities and critical thinking skills.

The MYP Mathematics curriculum covers four main branches in mathematics, namely number sense, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, and statistics and probability. As with other MYP subjects, IB Math is also assessed using four different assessment criteria, detailed as below:

  • Criterion A: Knowing and understanding
  • Criterion B: Investigating patterns
  • Criterion C: Communicating
  • Criterion D: Applying mathematics in real-life contexts.

Formative and summative assessments are usually assessed using a combination of criteria. Assessment tasks may include tests, mathematical investigations, reports, and solving real-life problems. Therefore, students have to be able to use different skills in order to succeed in the IB MYP Math curriculum. The IB MYP Math curriculum places special emphasis on the importance of mathematical communication, meaning that students have to be able to demonstrate their mathematical understanding through discussions, presentations and reports. Not only do they have to be able to understand mathematical concepts, but they also have to be able to apply these concepts and communicate methodology in organized and coherent ways.

While challenging, the IB MYP Math curriculum can enhance a student’s skills in mathematics, both procedurally and conceptually, so they can develop a holistic understanding of the subject. It helps them to relate the subject to real-world situations as well.

We understand that some students may struggle in the IB MYP Math curriculum not only because of procedural maths content, but also due to MYP’s emphasis on conceptual understanding.
