About the IB English Curriculum

As part of the IB DP programme, students are required to take at least one course from the “Studies in Language and Literature” course group. Students typically take it in English (hence referred to as “IB English”), and it spans across the course of two academic years. The courses build on the foundation that students have developed in PYP and MYP, allowing them to further hone and apply their critical thinking skills to form an opinion on the use of language in various contexts.

Depending on the school, students may be offered a choice between Language A: Literature and Language A: Language and Literature. Both are further divided in Standard Level and Higher Level, and candidates are required to take both internal and external assessments.

Literary works include poetry, novels and plays, while non-literary works range from news articles and travel writing to cartoons and ads. The IB English syllabus provides school teachers with a lot of liberty when it comes to choosing what work to study for the course, so the best way to prepare for it before you start the programme is to read across different genres and styles, and to reflect critically on what you have read.

In order to do well in the assessments, students will have to master the key skills of textual interpretation, analysis and evaluation, and essay writing. Both language syllabi are demanding in terms of the volume of works studied and the quality of response required from students. Not only do candidates have to be able to appreciate works holistically, but they also have to be able to flesh out their ideas coherently when it comes to the assessments, which is further complicated by the comparative element.

If your child is struggling with the English Language paper, you may consider engaging an IB English tutor in order to support their learning.

Our tutors have a proven track record of helping students excel in both courses, helping them to identify areas of struggle and to assist them on the challenging course. Our tutors can help reinforce students’ understanding of the works and aid them in their preparation for internal and external assessments. Classes can take place at our centre or online. Private one-on-one, semi-private and group courses are available.
