Top 4 Tips for High School Summer Interns

One of the best ways high school students can prepare for college is by completing a summer internship. However, securing an internship is just the first step. To make the most out of your time over the summer, read our advice and guidelines below.

1. Keep yourself busy (if you aren’t already)

Every internship is different. In some internships you will be given lots of tasks and responsibility. While in others you may only be given a few small assignments. If the former situation applies to you make sure you manage your time wisely. Keep a schedule and ensure that you complete all tasks in a timely manner. If the latter situation applies to you then be proactive and find innovative ways to use your time. Ask for more assignments or write a report on a topic relevant to your organization.

2. Get to know your colleagues and your boss

It’s never too early to build a network of contacts in a field that interests you. These contacts could be extremely valuable as you seek out additional opportunities in college and eventually seek a full time job after you graduate. These contacts can also serve as good mentors who can help you navigate your way through college and beyond.

3. Ask for a letter of recommendation at the end

As your internship draws to a close, consider asking your boss for a letter of recommendation. Your boss will be able to write things about you that a teacher never could. However, only ask your boss for a letter if you feel like you have made a good impression and if you think your boss actually knows enough about you (and your work) to write a strong letter. This underscores why it is so important to be proactive and visible throughout the duration of your internship.

4. Self-evaluate your performance

This internship may be your first time working in a business or non-profit environment. Thus, it is okay (even expected) that you will make some mistakes along the way. Use this experience to learn about yourself and your strengths and weaknesses. Learning about these things during high school gives you a huge advantage once you begin interning in college and beyond.
